This course will focus on physical therapy in relation to atypical development of the pediatric cardiovascular system. Understanding the typical development of the pediatric heart is essential prior to taking this course. Content will begin with interpretation of diagnostic testing followed by an in-depth look at the most commonly seen cardiovascular conditions. Surgical and medical interventions for each condition will be examined. Equipment and medication will be explored to the extent that it impacts physical therapy practice. The course will end with how to select appropriate interventions for specific age ranges and conditions. Material in this course is targeted toward PTs and OTs in the acute care, outpatient, and early intervention settings.

1. Cardiovascular Diagnostics

Diagnostic testing can often determine if a pediatric cardiovascular condition exists. It is important for physical therapists to be able to use information from testing to help establish a plan of care.

2. Cardiovascular Conditions

This chapter will discuss the most frequently seen cardiovascular defects the in the pediatric population. Emphasis will be placed on how defects impact development, as well as surgical and medical management of conditions.

3. Cardiovascular Equipment and Precautions

Precautions are often put into place once a cardiac condition is diagnosed or surgically corrected. This chapter will focus on common equipment and precautions associated with cardiac conditions, including precautions related to surgical protocols.

4. Cardiovascular Medications

Pediatric patients with cardiovascular conditions are often prescribed multiple medications.This chapter will discuss common medications that a physical therapist encounters in this population, as well as implications for practice.

5. Interventions for Cardiovascular Dysfunction

Appropriate age-related interventions for the pediatric cardiovascular population will be discussed during this chapter. Interventions will focus on commonly seen impairments, such as impairments in endurance and strength.
