The Eclectic Approach to TMD is a modern orthopedic manual therapy course. The Eclectic Approach was founded by Dr. Erson Religioso III. In this course participants will learn SFMA and repeated motion exam based patient classification and manual therapy techniques. The techniques include IASTM with The EDGE Tool, soft tissue release of the Upper Quarter, and joint mobilizations of the upper cervical spine and TMJ. Emphasis is placed on patient education and how to make the patient responsible for their own successful outcomes.

Dr. Erson Religioso III, DPT, MS, MTC, Cert. 1. Introduction

In this chapter, participants will be introduced to the the Eclectic Approach and how it relates to Repeated Motions Exam, SFMA, and Pain Science Education. Also, gain insight into Mariano Rocabado’s influence on TMD and Physical Therapy.

2. What is TMD?

Learn the common signs and symptoms of TMD. Determine how to differentiate between S curve and C curve, and their relevance. Identify how to market to and who to market to for this patient population. Define the typical demographics of the TMD patient.

3. Quick Anatomy

Review relevant anatomy of the TMJ. Discuss disc and joint biomechanics. Analyze the normal and dysfunctional movement of the TMJ.

4. Craniovertebral Relationship

Review Rocabado’s proven craniomandibular relationship. Discuss relevant patient education, and a quick review of the upper and lower cervical biomechanics.

5. Case Studies

The online learners will review a case study and follow up to combine their knowledge in the background of TMD, the anatomy of the TMJ and the craniovertebral relationship.
