1. Substance Use Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder in the Home Care Setting
This introductory chapter reviews statistics about substance use disorder and alcohol use disorder (SUD/AUD). Prevalence by age group, and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and severity ratings are discussed. An interdisciplinary approach to assessment is presented.
2. End-of-Life Care, Pain Management, and Addiction
There are special considerations when patients with SUD/AUD need pain medication. Assessing pain levels and differentiating between need and drug seeking within the unique realities of end-of-life care are addressed. Family members with SUD/AUD in the home present challenges to medication control and diversion.
3. Assessment and Intervention
Clinicians' treatment decisions benefit from standardized questionnaires and tests to make diagnoses. An overview of certain tests is presented, with a discussion about how best to administer them to the client or patient. Interdisciplinary interventions are presented with discussion of 12-step and non-12-step approaches.
