This course describes the development and implementation of a preschool intervention program addressing academic talk and executive functions, and includes multimedia examples of the program in action. The intervention program is a regular and special education collaboration and interconnects all five levels of positive emotional support, contextual support, interactional support, executive functions, and academic talk in order to support future reading comprehension and academic success for students. We will discuss screening, assessment, and intervention cycles, as well as guidelines for decision-making with regard to Response to Intervention (RTI) processes. Participants will learn how this intervention program was developed, organized, and implemented, including rationale and processes for the content of the program as well as practical information ranging from data collection forms, to parent and teacher resources, to prop and material selection.

This chapter introduces participants to a response to intervention program for preschool to first grade students that is designed to integrate and interconnect positive emotional support, contextual support, interactional support, and academic talk.

2. Introducing the Concepts of Academic Talk and Goal-Directed Behavior to Teachers

This chapter provides a detailed example of how speech language pathologists can introduce the concepts of academic talk and goal directed behavior or executive functions to general education classroom teachers. It includes examples of translated (non-jargon) information and resources about executive functions and academic talk that would be appropriate for use in trainings with general education teachers.

3. Procedures for Developing the Books for the TAB⁴I™ Program

This chapter describes procedures used for choosing and developing books for the TAB⁴I™ program, including choosing books, preparing books for adding scripts, developing and embedding scripts for preplanned discussions into the books, and developing data collection forms for Tier 2 progress monitoring.

4. Developing Other Components of the TAB⁴I™ Program

This chapter describes procedures for developing other components of the TAB⁴I™ program. These other components include things like props and songs for the TAB⁴I™ program, a Tier 2 assessment tool, parent resources, and manuals for teachers and SLPs.

5. Procedures for Teachers and SLPs to implement the TAB⁴I™ Program and Video of the Introductory Lesson

This chapter describes procedures for teachers and SLPs to implement the TAB⁴I™ program, as well as a video of the complete first introductory lesson for the TAB⁴I™ program in a small group intervention setting.

Participants will also learn about possible strategies for assessment and intervention of each sub-skill of academic talk and executive functions.

This course distinguishes between academic talk and casual talk and discusses implications for language assessment tools for pre-school children, especially those from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds. Participants will learn how analyses of spontaneous conversational language samples tap casual talk skills while formal language tests tap academic talk skills. There will be discussion of the general pattern of strengths and weaknesses in language registers for children whose parents have lower education levels, and a new role for SLPs will be considered for diagnosing weaknesses specific to the academic talk register.

This course introduces general language teaching principles and procedures that extend beyond teaching executive functions and academic talk and are useful for addressing a variety of language and learning targets. Macro variable teaching strategies for fostering preschool language skills in general will be described, including organizational level structures, context, location, activities and materials, person providing the intervention, and topics of talk. Micro variable teaching strategies will also be introduced, including those related to positive emotional support, contextual support, interactional support, and adult language use. Specific hypothetical as well as real-life examples of many strategies are provided.
