Speech-language pathologists in both school and medical settings encounter children with voice disorders and may lack confidence in their knowledge and skills in dealing with this specific population. In part three of this four-course series, we will outline the theoretical and physiologic bases of voice therapy for children with benign lesions. We will discuss child development and discuss how developmental level influences how we make treatment decisions in children with voice disorders. This course will then describe and demonstrate specific approaches to voice therapy and how to adapt these to fit the child's individual needs and level.

Maia Nystrum Braden, MS, CCC-SLP

Maia Braden, MS, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist with eleven years of experience working in voice and voice disorders. She became interested in speech pathology as a singer and earned her MS in Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. From there, she completed a clinical fellowship in voice at the Emory Voice Center.…

1. Introduction to Pediatric Voice Therapy

This chapter will introduce the basic principles of voice therapy, the evidence behind why it is important, and the literature supporting the efficacy of voice therapy in treating voice disorders in children. We will also discuss the logistics of a typical course of voice therapy in the outpatient clinical setting.

2. Principles of Pediatric Voice Therapy

This chapter will address the physiologic and learning principles behind voice therapy. It will provide a brief introduction to several commonly used voice therapy approaches and the rationale behind them.

3. Planning Voice Therapy

This chapter will discuss how to formulate a treatment plan including appropriate goals and strategies, based on the information from the evaluation.

4. Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises

This chapter will introduce the theoretical and physiologic principles behind exercises with a semi-occluded vocal tract. We will demonstrate commonly used exercises and discuss how these can be adapted to different age levels.

5. Flow Phonation

This chapter will introduce the theoretical and physiologic principles behind flow phonation exercises. We will demonstrate flow mode and discuss how it can be adapted to different age levels.

6. Case Studies

This chapter will expand on the information introduced in the previous chapter through a series of case studies. The history, acoustic/aerodynamic assessment, and treatment plan for three pediatric cases will be explored.
