This course is designed to introduce the ICF-CY framework with a focus on participation in community-based activities. The course will also discuss contextual factors that influence participation, as well as perceived barriers and facilitators to participation. The ICF provides a framework for discussing health and disability for children and youth (CY) with consideration for both the individual and populations with disabilities. This framework will serve as a foundation for future chapters examining instruments that measure participation and evaluating strategies team members use to successfully involve children and youth with disabilities in community-based activities.

Dr. Scalise-Smith is the Dean of the College of Health Professions, a professor in the Department of Health Science, and a full professor in the Department of Allied Health at Northern Kentucky University. 1. ICF-CY
In this chapter we'll discuss the historical perspective of the ICF model as it relates to human rights of children, particularly children and youth with disabilities. Participants will examine the ICF framework and the application to children and youth with disabilities.
2. Contextual Factors
Contextual factors influence the participation of children and youth with disabilities within the ICF framework through both personal and environmental factors. By comparing the role of team members and identifying these contextual factors, we can examine the strategies that impact and influence participation.
3. Facilitators and Barriers to Participation
This chapter will evaluate perceived barriers and facilitators to children and youth with disabilities participating in community-based programs. Participants will be able to identify strategies to overcome the barriers and embrace facilitators to participation.
