One area of care that has the potential to have a big impact on both items is oral health. Costs related to diabetes and pneumonia care can be reduced by improving oral care. 1. The Current State of Oral Health of Dependent Adults
The Surgeon General has reported that elder residents have the worst oral health of any population. This chapter will discuss the causes of this and the implications for those caring for dependent adults.
2. Oral Health: What’s the Big Deal?
While oral care is typically thought about as a personal care item, when oral health is poor, it can lead to a wealth of other medical problems. This chapter will discuss what medical conditions can be caused by poor oral health. Care teams have a goal of keeping clients healthy, and this is not obtainable without ensuring good oral health.
3. Oral Care Education: The Band-Aid to the Oral Health Issue
Many organizations attempt to remedy the oral health issue by providing the care team with oral care in-service training. Research shows this is not an effective way to improve oral health. This chapter will discuss the pitfalls of this plan.
