The population is aging, which is leading to an increase in the number of residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Due to advances in dentistry, the availability of dental insurance, and improved personal health measures and diets, elders have retained their teeth more than any other previous generation. While this seems like a win, teeth can cause problems far beyond the mouth once elders can no longer take care of their own oral health. This retention of teeth creates a need for care teams to understand as much as possible about the mouth as well as the complications and consequences of poor oral health. This course addresses the longevity of teeth, oral systemic connection, common oral diseases, and knowing what oral situations to report to a nurse manager. This content is aimed at the nursing assistant and is also applicable for nurses.

1. The Coming of Age of Teeth
The Surgeon General has reported that elder residents have the worst oral health of any population. This chapter will talk about why this statistic is true and how this has happened.
2. The Mouth and the Body Are Connected
It may seem that oral health has nothing to do with overall health, but that is not the case. This chapter will discuss other illnesses, such as diabetes and aspiration pneumonia, that can be caused by poor oral health.
3. The Root of the Problem (No Pun Intended)
Dental disease is 100% preventable. This chapter will provide an understanding of the cause of dental disease and how it is prevented.
4. What Am I Looking For?
Care teams are tasked with letting supervisors know if they see anything that may need attention in a resident’s mouth. This chapter will show and discuss some of the abnormalities such as tooth decay, bleeding gums, and broken teeth that should be reported.
