This is the second in a three-part series on Nutrition and Exercise in the aging population. The focus is interdisciplinary, looking specifically at the aging process, and deals with the changing perspectives concerning nutrition and exercise's relationship to health, disease and aging. This course will focus on how nutrition, lifestyle and activity impact the aging process. Discussion will include nutrition and recommended nutrient intake for health and activity.

1. Defining Aging, Disease, & Nutritional Risks in the Elderly

This chapter presents information on the process of how genetics, nutrition, exercise, activity and lifestyle impact health and wellness. Physiologic changes from young adulthood to old age are discussed

2. Malnutrition

This chapter discusses malnutrition and the risk factors and consequences of micro nutrition.. You'll understand the impact of malnutrition on health and disease.

3. Single Nutrient Deficiency

This chapter presents single nutrient deficiencies and how a single factor can impact health. Changes in nutrient needs with age are presented, and specific causes of single nutrient deficiency, consequences, and recommendations for modification are discussed.

4. Obesity

This is a chapter that discusses the specific health consequences of obesity. In addition, the risks for obesity and the subsequent risk for numerous diseases are discussed. The impact of obesity on activity and exercise is also presented. Exercise tolerance in obesity is introduced and will be presented in greater detail in a subsequent section of this course series.

5. Assessing Nutrition/Smart Choices & Exercise

This chapter is focused on assessing an individual for nutritional status. A discussion of smart food choices and the importance of complementary activity and exercise are stressed. A self-assessment to determine your nutritional health is presented with the scoring. The components of a healthy diet are presented. The interaction between nutrients and medications is presented. Weight management and caloric content of foods will be discussed. Recommendations for daily activity / exercise will be introduced as the basis for subsequent content.
