Intervention for children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders is a dynamic process that requires constant problem solving because of the variety and complexity of impairments present in these children. Neurodevelopmental Treatment, or NDT, provides a foundation and structure for intervention that includes ongoing problem solving and allows the clinician to utilize NDT handling strategies, as well as other techniques, to promote function and participation. This course will discuss the operational definition of NDT and provide examples of NDT intervention strategies including facilitation and elongation. A case presentation will also be used to illustrate the intervention process.

1. Definition of NDT

This chapter will provide will discuss the recently developed operational definition of NDT and explain the various components as they relate to clinical intervention with children who have cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders.

2. Enhancing Postural Stability and Its Role in Intervention Strategies

This chapter will provide a foundation for intervention strategies used to enhance postural control and stability that are necessary for function. Dr. Kliebhan will describe and differentiate critical elements of posture and movement, discuss characteristics of musculature and central nervous system connections, and provide ideas for incorporating this information into intervention strategies.

3. Facilitation, Elongation, Inhibition and Their Role in Intervention

This chapter will define facilitation, elongation, and inhibition and describe their role in NDT intervention to improve function for children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. A demonstration will be include, which will introduce facilitation of movement and transitions from prone to sitting, sitting to quadruped, and quadruped to tall kneel on an adult model.

4. Patient Case Example

This chapter will provide a video case example of a treatment for a child with cerebral palsy, which will include a pre-test of the session goal, examples of intervention strategies, and a post-test.
