This is the first course in a two part series titled Home Modifications: Foundations for Practice. This course provides the foundation of knowledge necessary to complete home evaluations and make effective home modification and assistive technology recommendations. The ability to make these recommendations will enable persons with disabilities to live in their community and age in place. Participants will explore current trends in home modifications, including patient needs, challenges, and associated costs. They will review the theoretical framework for home modification interventions as well as basic construction principles as they relate to common home modifications.

1. Industry Trends

In the first chapter of this course on home modification, Marnie Renda begins by defining industry trends, including the increasing shift toward consideration of complex environmental modifications. Participants will review the process for home modifications including evaluation, intervention, implementation, and outcomes.

2. Key Definitions

Chapter 2 defines key terminology for home modifications. Marnie Renda explores the relationship between assistive technology, environmental modifications, and services needed to enable persons with disabilities to live in the community. Participants will identify the key targeted outcomes for home modifications.

3. Universal Design

Marnie Renda discusses the seven principles of universal design and demonstrates the implementation of those principles when selecting home modification and assistive technologies. Participants will explore multiple examples of universal design products and environments to enhance their ability to translate this information into everyday practice.

4. Team Members and Their Roles

Participants will learn about members of the home modification team, including the client, therapist, architect, and financial advisor. They will explore each member’s roles, strengths and weaknesses, and review how these change depending on the healthcare setting.

5. Question and Answer

Marnie Renda engages in a question and answer session with a physical therapist named Tim Slinger. They discuss industry trends of home modifications and the roles that each team member plays in recommending and developing home modifications.
