Heart failure is a serious condition that affects approximately 5 million adults in the United States. As a home health aide, you may care for many patients with heart failure. This course explains the condition of heart failure and how it may affect the body. Home health aide goals for providing safe care are discussed, as well as how to observe for changes in the patient condition. Reporting details are provided regarding who the home health aide should contact and when, as well as what should be documented pertaining to the patient with heart failure.

1. Case Scenario and Course Overview

In this chapter, we will introduce the agenda and learning objectives for this course, and present an example of a scenario you may encounter in your work with patients.

2. Causes and Symptoms of Heart Failure

This chapter will define heart failure as well as the causes, signs, and symptoms an aide may see when caring for patients. We will also be connecting our learning back to our initial example scenario.

3. Goals of Care

Providing excellent personal care and maintaining patient safety are some of the most important aspects of an aide's scope of work. In this chapter, we will present the personal care and patient safety considerations unique to a patient living with heart failure.

4. Putting It All Together

In this chapter, we will present a new patient example and demonstrate how an ideal care interaction should look as well as what the aide would document and report back to the rest of the care team.
