Care and management of a urinary device not only requires knowledge of maintenance, but also being able to identify early complications and troubleshooting potential malfunctions. This session will review the types of urinary devices that an aide will encounter in the course of caring for a patient and how to both manage and prevent complications.

This chapter will review types of urinary devices that the aide may encounter during the course of caring for a patient, review of terms associated with the urinary system, and potential complications of urinary devices.

3. Care of a Urinary Device

Care of the urinary device plays a big role in prevention of complications, specifically infection. This area will review/demonstrate how to clean and care for the urinary device and collection bag.

4. Documentation and Next Steps

Documentation plays a necessary role in home care. This chapter will review indications to notify the supervisor and how to document this interaction in the patients record.
