Physical therapists and other school-based related service providers may be unaware of how to find resources, including primary source information, to help answer questions on policies, rules, and regulations that guide their delivery of school-based services. This course will prepare school-based related service providers to effectively use internet resources for guidance and clarification in the delivery of services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504. Through hands-on application and examples, participants will have an opportunity to find appropriate regulations, official documents, and interpretative guidelines that can be used daily in the delivery of special education and related services or accommodations.

1. Legislative and Regulatory Process

This chapter will provide information on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as a federal education law and emphasize the differences between federal and state statutes and regulations. The chapter will also assist the participant in understanding the links between federal, state, and local policies and regulations that affect implementation at the school district level.

2. Searching for Information

This chapter will assist the participant in learning to use several key websites for searching the IDEA federal statute and regulations and finding other relevant materials. There will be explanation and demonstration of how to use federal, state, and local resources and documents to support each other and build a more complete understanding.

3. Applying Search Strategies to Answer Questions

This chapter will put the strategies for searching into action and guide participants in learning where and how to start their search process to answer questions about service delivery for children with disabilities in schools and early intervention. Through demonstration and examples, participants will gain new skills in learning where to find information and how to use it effectively to communicate with other team members.
