Accreditation Check:

Abnormal/dysfunctional breathing has been identified as a clinical condition that affects one's general health and well-being, pain levels, and neuromusculoskeletal movement strategies/efficiency. Abnormal/dysfunctional breathing has been shown in the literature to accompany many of the conditions that physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and athletic trainers treat clinically, such as low back and neck pain, pelvic pain, anxiety, and depression. There is also emerging empirical evidence that retraining breathing to restore normal breathing patterns can improve functional outcomes and athletic performance. During this course, participants will review respiratory mechanics and physiology under normal and pathological conditions, and identify abnormal or dysfunctional breathing patterns that can be evaluated in their patients. Evidence-based assessments of the respiratory system will be covered. By the completion of this course, participants will gain the skills necessary to effectively integrate evidence-based breathing assessment techniques into their clinical practice.

1. What Is Dysfunctional Breathing and Why Should We Care?

In this chapter, we will learn that breathing is a central aspect of our whole being and it plays a vital role in all the physiological functions of our body.

2. Review of Respiratory Anatomy and Mechanics

Participants will review the physiology and mechanics of the respiratory system under normal and abnormal conditions. This information will provide critical background information for formulating accurate assessments of their patients with dysfunctional breathing.

3. Dysfunctional Breathing and Neuromusculoskeletal Pain

Current evidence will be reviewed regarding pain neuroscience and central/peripheral sensitization. The relationship between pain neuroscience principles and dysfunctional breathing will be identified. Participants will be able to apply pain neuroscience educational principles to their current clinical practice after completing this chapter.

4. Evidence-Based Assessments of Functional and Dysfunctional Breathing

A lecture and demonstration of the assessments of normal and dysfunctional breathing will be provided. Recent research regarding the validity and reliability of these assessments is included. Participants will be able to formulate an efficient evaluation plan of functional and dysfunctional breathing using the information covered in this chapter.
