The assessment and treatment of the pediatric/adolescent hip and pelvis is often overlooked due to differences from the adult population. This course will introduce clinicians to a variety of hip/pelvis-specific conditions that frequently affect adolescent athletes. It will teach clinicians functional assessments to enhance their clinical decision-making for return to sports with these patients.

Kristin Hayden Hebert, PT, DPT

Kristin is a pediatric sports physical therapist at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, Florida. She has been working as a PT with adolescent athletes for more than ten years. She specializes in dance injury prevention with focuses on spine and hip pathologies in pediatric dancers and gymnasts.

1. Overview of Common Hip and Pelvis Pathologies

This chapter will examine common hip and pelvis pathologies unique to the pediatric/adolescent athlete and the role of rehabilitation specialists. The chapter will examine dysfunctional movement patterns associated with pediatric/adolescent hip and pelvic conditions, including hip instability, labral tears, hip impingement, muscle strains, pelvic apophyseal injuries, and red flag conditions.

2. Functional Assessment of the Hip and Pelvis

This chapter will implement functional assessments for the evaluation of pediatric/adolescent athletes with hip and pelvic conditions to improve clinical decision-making.

3. Evidence-Based Treatment Through the Five Phases of Rehab

This chapter will implement functional assessments in the evaluation of pediatric/adolescent dancers to improve clinical decision-making. It will detail how to select dance-specific screening tools for injury risk identification and dance participation clearance.
