This course provides nurses with an overview of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) from onset to end-stage. Prevalence, risk factors, major causes, and stages of CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) will be presented. Review of renal anatomy and glomerular filtration rate will also be covered. This course is appropriate for nurses working in any setting, but particularly targets acute care, long-term care, home health care, and inpatient rehabilitation.

1. Introduction to Chronic Kidney Disease

Nurses need to be aware of the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among their patients. Identification of the appropriate stages of CKD from onset to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is needed in order to determine appropriate nursing interventions. This chapter will provide an overview of the renal system as well as covering the prevalence and different stages of CKD and ESRD.

2. Risk Factors and Major Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease

Understanding the risk factors and major causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is needed for early identification and treatment. Appropriate nursing interventions, including patient education & interventions to minimize risks are necessary.

3. Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease

Knowledge of the different stages of chronic kidney disease from onset to end-stage renal disease is needed to provide appropriate interventions. Each stage has specific needs beginning with patient education and changing patient needs as they move from CKD to ESRD. Understanding the changes from CKD to ESRD will help guide the nurse in appropriate interventions for their patients. This chapter covers the bodily changes that happen during progression from CKD to ESRD.
