This course will explore dysphagia as it manifests in COPD. It will also provide clinicians with tools to identify patients with dysphagia, with a goal of reducing complications, including pneumonia and acute exacerbations. Clinicians will also leave this course with strategies to improve swallow and respiratory dysfunction and to improve outcomes in these chronically ill patients.

1. Dysphagia in COPD: Why Does It Matter?

Chapter 1 will examine the relationships between swallowing dysfunction and negative outcomes in patients with COPD, including pneumonias and acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPDs).

2. Dysphagia in COPD: What Does It Look Like?

This chapter will explore the specific characteristics of dysphagia in patients with COPD, including breathing-swallow discoordination, anatomical and physiological changes, and the contribution of GER.

3. Dysphagia in COPD: How Can We Assess It?

The respiratory characteristics typically associated with dysphagia will be examined in order to ensure early identification and assist with prevention of negative outcomes.

4. Dysphagia in COPD: How Can We Help?

In chapter 4, clinicians will be provided with compensatory strategies, management tips, and exercises to improve swallow function in individuals with COPD.
