In this course, the participant will learn the basics of pelvic floor muscle development and bowel and bladder physiology that may impact children. The role of posture in pelvic floor function will be discussed to help the practitioner gain a deeper understanding of why children have incontinence and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Gross motor milestones and their effects on pelvic floor development will be explored to help therapists create a multifaceted treatment program for the typically developing child with bowel and bladder dysfunction. Toilet training to help prevent bowel and bladder dysfunction for the typically developing child will be discussed in depth. Finally, common issues such as pediatric incontinence and constipation will be explored to allow the practitioner to understand the differences between treating pelvic floor dysfunction in children versus in adults.
