Bariatric Care Part 2: Providing Sensitive Care and Eliminating Bias

1. Weight (Obesity) Bias: Scope of the Problem

Weight bias, also referred to as obesity bias, is a well-documented phenomenon affecting individuals with overweight and obesity. This chapter will provide an examination of weight bias, including the scope of the problem and contributing factors. Participants will be encouraged to consider their own weight (obesity) bias status.

2. Types and Effects of Weight (Obesity) Bias

Weight (obesity) bias has been shown to have significant health and wellness impacts on individuals. From providing a barrier to accessing care, to affecting care interventions being offered, weight bias and its consequences can negatively impact health and quality of life. This chapter will review various types and potential effects of weight (obesity) bias encountered in health care, citing examples from personal experience and current literature.

3. Effects and Implications of Weight (Obesity) Bias

This chapter will take a look at the emotional and psychological effects and implications weight bias and stigma have on the individual/patient. The impact weight bias can have on a patient's access to health care is also discussed.

4. Eliminating Bias and Providing Sensitive Care

Taking steps to enhance the provision of safe, sensitive care to persons with overweight and obesity can reduce barriers and improve outcomes. This chapter will discuss interventions to take to eliminate weight bias and its negative effects. Communication will be addressed, including incorporation of "person-first" language and approaches, physical environment considerations, and appropriate supplies for the optimal care of persons with overweight and obesity. Participants will be encouraged to evaluate their own language choices, care environments, and supplies available in their work settings. A case study will allow the learner to synthesize and apply content presented in this course.
