As the longevity and the activity level of our aging population increases, Osteoarthritis and its effects have the potential to become a significant public health issue. 51.8 million adults report they have some form of arthritis. 14% of people over the age of 75 report significant limitations due to their arthritis. This course will provide an overview of OA as a public health issue, provide a definition of OA, and review the current literature in regards to pain and pain generation. Finally, we will identify current evidence regarding the conservative care of OA and propose specific, evidence based interventions for treatment.

1. The Burden of OA and Musculoskeletal Disease
Our aging population and the increase in covered lives as a result of the provision of the ACA have made arthritis a burgeoning public health issue.
2. The Biology Behind Osteoarthritis
Inflammation, though not as evident in OA as in RA, appears to be one of the significant drivers of OA and its progression. This chapter will discuss the current evidence and theories surrounding the biology of Osteoarthritis and its impact on choice of intervention for Physical Therapists.
3. Clinical Diagnosis and Classification of Osteoarthritis
Clinical diagnosis of Osteoarthritis is typically completed by a physician, but it is critical that clinicians understand the diagnostic criteria MD’s are using for their patients. Additionally, they are criteria that clinicians can use in the clinic to evaluate patients if they are suspicious of the presence of Osteoarthritis. This chapter will present a broad overview of the clinical criteria and classification of the patient with OA.
4. Rehabilitation and Conservative Care for Osteoarthritis
With dwindling healthcare dollars, shrinking access and a shift toward conservative care, rehabilitation interventions for OA have received increased attention. In the last 5 years there has been an explosion of research into specific exercises, dose and intensity of intervention. This chapter will provided a broad overview of the current literature and its application to clinical practice.
