Skin functions as a barrier against harmful components and dehydration of the body. Bathing is an important task that protects the skin. Bathing and shampooing hair remove sweat, oil, dirt, and bacteria from the patient's skin and hair; stimulate circulation; and provide patients with a refreshed and relaxed feeling. Bathing also provides an opportunity to assess the patient's skin condition and any abnormalities. There are multiple methods in which a patient can be bathed, including bed bath, tub bath, sponge bath, and showering. The method used is based on the patient's ability and the written plan of care. This course will provide the home health aide with the basic techniques of proper bathing and shampooing hair in the shower.
