This course will define central-line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) for the nurse. Statistics on CLABSI will be given, with a focus on the associated increased morbidity and mortality of the older client. Various techniques to prevent CLABSI will be discussed.

1. Defining CLABSI

This chapter will provide a definition of CLABSI per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). An overview of signs and symptoms of potential CLABSI are presented. Diagnosing CLABSI can only be done with positive blood cultures, so this process is also reviewed.

2. CLABSI in Older Adults

The elderly are more at risk for CLABSI due to the aging process. This chapter will give a statistical review of CLABSI and the effect on patients in reference to increased morbidity and mortality in the U.S.

3. Prevention of CLABSI

This chapter will give a short review of hand hygiene as an important step in the prevention of CLABSI. Scrubbing the hub and capping the lines are preventative measures that will be discussed. When to do IV site dressing changes will be reviewed.
