How do you treat a wound? What type of dressing should you recommend? How do you protect the wound as it heals? Is there a way to reduce a patient's risk for developing a wound? There are a lot of treatment options out there for enhancing wound healing. Knowing how to manage a wound effectively involves a good assessment followed by a solid understanding of what is necessary for wound healing and what interventions can assist. This course builds on the four step process for wound management and describes rationale and techniques for the last two steps (maintaining a moist wound bed and protecting the wound) that will aid therapists in the home and other settings as they effectively and efficiently manage patients with wounds.

How do you know when a wound is healing as it should and when it could use an intervention to help it along? Wound healing is an amazing process that occurs in similar fashion for all wounds whether they are open or closed, regardless of their causative factors. A patient who sprains her ankle will by and large go through the same wound healing process as someone who develops a pressure ulcer. Understanding what occurs during this process of wound healing aids therapists in making well informed decisions about whether or not to treat and how to treat. This course provides the background physiological information that will aid in assessing and intervening with people who have wounds. Acute and chronic wound healing are compared and contrasted providing, the information needed to enhance wound healing for practitioners in the home and other settings.

It is well known that exercise can help patients at all phases of their rehabilitation, but what exercises are best for patients who lack stability, initiation, and motor control? In order to improve function and activity and progress safely into performance improvement and advanced skills, exercises prescribed during this time need to focus on facilitating stability and motor control. This course discusses the physiology behind stability, performance initiation and motor control, how clinicians can use a clinical decision making process for therapeutic exercise prescription, and practical examples of assessing and prescribing exercise for improving these areas. With this information clinicians enhance patient outcomes, safety, and optimal movement through appropriate use of exercise.

It is well known that exercise can help patients at all phases of their rehabilitation, but what exercises are best for patients who have near normal strength, power, muscle endurance, balance, and aerobic capacity but just need to work on high level activities? In order to maximize function and delay declines, exercises prescribed during this time need to focus on advanced coordination and multimodal training. This course discusses the physiology behind advanced coordination and skill exercises including plyometrics, how clinicians can use a clinical decision making process for therapeutic exercise prescription, and practical examples of assessing and prescribing exercise for older adults. With this information clinicians bring patients and clients to their highest level of function through appropriate use of exercise.

How do you decide what exercise and what dosage is appropriate for your patient? Therapeutic exercise is a mainstay of rehabilitation and one of the most effective interventions to address our patient's impairments, limitations, and restrictions. Having an evidence-based framework for determining appropriate exercise given the patient's current physiologic function and contextual factors is the basis for sound exercise prescription. This course discusses a clinical decision making process for therapeutic exercise prescription and provides practical examples of its use. This information will enhance exercise interventions for practitioners of all levels.
