Joan Arvedson

PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, ASHA Fellow

Joan Arvedson, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, internationally renowned clinician and teacher, is a feeding and swallowing specialist at Children's Wisconsin. She is Clinical Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Pediatrics, Medical College of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Dr. Arvedson received her BS, MS, and PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Arvedson has focused patient care, teaching, and research on swallowing and feeding disorders in infants and children, delivering evidence-based knowledge and immediately applicable strategies via workshops and seminars throughout the world. She emphasizes a functional "whole" child approach stressing the importance of collaboration among professionals and caregivers.

Two self-study courses for continuing education by Dr. Arvedson (Clinical Decision Making and Management of Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Problems) are available through ASHA. Dr. Arvedson has numerous articles focused on pediatric swallowing and feeding in peer reviewed journals. She was a founding member of the ASHA's Board of Certified Specialists in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, past-president of SENTAC and NYSSLHA. She was awarded Honors of ASHA in 2016 and is an ASHA Fellow.
